How much sugar for your cat?
Most guides say "a few pieces". Enter your cat's weight and get the actual daily ceiling, worked out from sugar's calories and the 10%-of-daily-calories treat rule vets use.
Assumes a healthy, neutered adult at a stable weight, and that this is their only treat that day. Puppies, pregnant, very active or unwell pets need different amounts — ask your vet.
Why this verdict for cats
Cats cannot even taste sweetness and gain nothing from sugar. Non-toxic but best avoided.
Sugar is not poisonous to dogs in the way chocolate or xylitol are, which is exactly why it causes so much harm — it slips into a dog's diet in small daily doses that nobody counts, and the damage shows up years later.
How much is safe?
None deliberately. Dogs have no dietary requirement for added sugar at all, and their taste for it is not a nutritional signal. The fruit sugar in a slice of apple is a different matter from a biscuit, a spoon of ice cream or a sugary cereal.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
In the short term, sugar causes stomach upset, gas and diarrhoea, and it feeds the bacteria that cause dental disease — which is already the most common health problem in adult dogs. Over the longer term it drives weight gain, and obesity in turn drives arthritis, diabetes and a shorter life. Dogs can and do develop diabetes.
How to serve it safely
The practical advice is to keep sweet human food out of the bowl entirely and use fruit, vegetables or a proper dog treat when you want to give something. If a food is sugar-free, check the label for xylitol first — that swap is far more dangerous than the sugar it replaced.

Is a little ice cream ok?
It is sugar plus dairy plus fat, and most adult dogs digest lactose poorly. A lick is not an emergency, but there is no version of this that is good for them — and never the sugar-free kind, which may contain xylitol.
What about honey?
Honey is still sugar. A small amount is not toxic, but it should be treated as a sweet rather than a health food, and it is not suitable for puppies or diabetic dogs.
