How much is safe?
A small pinch of ground cinnamon is harmless, but there is little reason to add it. Most supermarket cinnamon is cassia, which contains coumarin — a compound that can affect the liver in large or sustained amounts. Ceylon cinnamon has far less. The realistic risk is not a dusting on a treat; it is a dog getting into the spice jar.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
Loose stools, vomiting and mouth irritation. Inhaled powder is a genuine and underrated problem: cinnamon powder irritates the airways and can cause coughing, choking and breathing difficulty, which is why a dog nosing an open jar is worse than one licking a biscuit. Large sustained amounts of cassia raise liver concerns. Cinnamon essential oil is considerably more concentrated and should be kept away entirely.
How to serve it safely
If you want it in a homemade treat, use a pinch of Ceylon cinnamon. What matters more is what else is in the recipe — baked goods often contain nutmeg, which is toxic to dogs, along with sugar, butter and sometimes raisins or chocolate.
