Estimate based on RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75, multiplied by a standard activity/life-stage factor (MER). Every pet is different — breed, metabolism and health all matter. Use this as a starting point and confirm the target with your veterinarian, especially for weight-loss plans.
How many calories does my pet need?
This estimates how many calories your dog or cat needs each day, based on weight, life stage and goal.
What the numbers mean
- Daily kcal — the total energy your pet needs per day.
- Resting need (RER) — the calories just to rest — 70 × (weight in kg) to the power 0.75.
- MER (maintenance) — RER × an activity/life-stage factor = the real daily target.
- Treat budget — keep treats to about 10% of daily calories so they don't unbalance the diet.
How to use it
- Find your food's calories — check the bag for kcal per cup or per gram.
- Divide your pet's daily calorie target by that number to get the daily amount.
- Split it into two meals a day (more often for puppies).
- Keep treats to about 10% of the daily calories, and adjust by watching your pet's weight over a few weeks.
Common questions
Is kcal the same as calories?
Yes — what we casually call a food calorie is technically a kilocalorie (kcal). They're the same here.
Two dogs weigh the same but need different amounts — why?
Activity, age, neutering and metabolism all change needs, which is why the tool asks more than just weight.
Should I feed the resting (RER) number?
No — RER is just the at-rest baseline. Feed the higher daily (MER) target unless your vet says otherwise.
