Plantains look like bananas and behave like potatoes, and that difference is the entire story. Where a ripe banana is soft and sweet, a plantain is dense with resistant starch that a pet's digestive system cannot handle raw.
How much is safe?
A small piece of plain cooked plantain occasionally for a dog; for cats, a taste at most, and there is no reason to offer it. Cooking is not optional here — raw plantain is very high in resistant starch and reliably causes gas, bloating and stomach discomfort. It is also calorie-dense, roughly twice a banana, so portions should be genuinely small.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
Gas, bloating, constipation or diarrhoea depending on the pet, and weight gain if it becomes a habit. The bigger real-world problem is how plantain is usually served: fried in oil, often salted, sometimes sweetened. Fried plantain is a fat load that can trigger pancreatitis in susceptible dogs.
How to serve it safely
Boil or steam a small piece plain, with no oil, salt, butter or sugar, and let it cool. Peel it — the skin is thick, fibrous and indigestible. Mash it for small dogs. Never share tostones, maduros or any fried preparation.

Can cats have cooked plantain?
