How much guava for your cat?

Most guides say "a few pieces". Enter your cat's weight and get the actual daily ceiling, worked out from guava's calories and the 10%-of-daily-calories treat rule vets use.

Assumes a healthy, neutered adult at a stable weight, and that this is their only treat that day. Puppies, pregnant, very active or unwell pets need different amounts โ€” ask your vet.

Why this verdict for cats

Guava is non-toxic in tiny amounts but sugary, and cats gain little from fruit.

Guava is a reasonable occasional fruit treat for dogs, with the usual tropical-fruit caveat about sugar โ€” and one specific point about the variety you happen to have.

How much is safe?

A small piece of peeled flesh for a medium dog, occasionally. Guava is high in vitamin C, which dogs manufacture themselves and do not need from food, and fairly high in natural sugar, so it is a treat rather than a supplement. Cats can have a taste with no harm and no benefit.

What happens if a cat eats too much?

Diarrhoea and stomach upset from the combination of sugar and fibre โ€” guava is unusually fibrous. Larger amounts also mean a meaningful sugar load for a small dog.

How to serve it safely

Peel it, remove the hard central seeds where you can, and cut the flesh into small pieces. The seeds of some varieties are hard enough to crack a tooth and are difficult to digest, so a seedless variety or careful preparation is worth the trouble. Skip guava paste and juice, both of which are heavily sweetened.

Frequently asked questions

Are guava seeds dangerous?

Not toxic, but hard and indigestible. In quantity they can contribute to an upset stomach, and in a small dog they are a choking risk. Removing them is the safer route.

Is the skin safe?

It is not toxic, but it is tough and often carries pesticide residue. Wash and peel.
