How much tangerine for your cat?
Most guides say "a few pieces". Enter your cat's weight and get the actual daily ceiling, worked out from tangerine's calories and the 10%-of-daily-calories treat rule vets use.
Assumes a healthy, neutered adult at a stable weight, and that this is their only treat that day. Puppies, pregnant, very active or unwell pets need different amounts — ask your vet.
Why this verdict for cats
Cats dislike citrus and the acidity can upset the stomach, so tangerine is best avoided.
Tangerines, mandarins and clementines are all mild citrus, and they sit in the same place as oranges for pets: the flesh is harmless in small amounts, and everything around it is not.
How much is safe?
One or two segments for a medium dog, occasionally — and honestly most dogs dislike the acidity. There is no nutritional case for it, since dogs make their own vitamin C. For cats, none: cats find citrus scent aversive and citrus oils are more irritating to them.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
The acid and sugar together cause vomiting, drooling and diarrhoea. The concentrated oils in the peel and pith are the bigger issue — they contain compounds that irritate the digestive tract and, in larger amounts, can cause more pronounced illness.
How to serve it safely
Peel it completely, remove the white pith and any seeds, and offer a segment or two. Never the peel. Never citrus essential oil, which is far more concentrated and genuinely dangerous, particularly to cats.
