How much pistachios for your cat?

Why this verdict for cats
Pistachios are fatty, salty and a choking risk from the shell. Not suitable for cats.
Pistachios combine several small problems into one snack: a lot of fat, a lot of salt, a shell that dogs rarely bother to remove, and a nut that is particularly associated with mould.
How much is safe?
There is no good reason to offer them. If a dog steals one or two shelled, unsalted ones, that is not an emergency — but pistachios are among the fattiest common nuts and are usually sold heavily salted.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
Stomach upset and greasy stools at the low end, pancreatitis in prone dogs at the higher end, and salt overload from the seasoned versions. Shells are the most common practical problem: sharp, indigestible, and capable of causing an obstruction or damaging the gut. Pistachios also carry aflatoxin risk, a liver-damaging mould toxin.
How to serve it safely
Better not to serve them at all. If you want a nut-flavoured treat, a small amount of xylitol-free peanut butter is a safer route.

Worth a vet call, especially for a small dog or if several were eaten. Watch for repeated vomiting, straining, appetite loss or a painful belly over the following days.
Are salted nuts really that bad?
For an occasional single nut, no. The concern is a dog working through a bowl — that is a genuine sodium load for a small body, on top of the fat.
