How much cashews for your cat?
Most guides say "a few pieces". Enter your cat's weight and get the actual daily ceiling, worked out from cashews's calories and the 10%-of-daily-calories treat rule vets use.
Assumes a healthy, neutered adult at a stable weight, and that this is their only treat that day. Puppies, pregnant, very active or unwell pets need different amounts โ ask your vet.
Why this verdict for cats
Cashews are fatty and not a natural cat food, with a choking risk. Best avoided.
Cashews are among the safer nuts for dogs in the sense that they are not toxic, but they land firmly in the category of foods that are fine in theory and a poor idea in practice.
How much is safe?
One or two plain, unsalted, roasted cashews as a rare treat for a medium dog. Cashews are high in fat and calories, so they add up fast in a small body, and salted versions โ which is most of them โ add a sodium load nobody needs. Raw cashews should be avoided: unprocessed cashews contain an irritant related to poison ivy, which is why commercially sold ones are always heat-treated.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
Vomiting, diarrhoea and greasy stools, with pancreatitis a real risk in prone dogs after a fatty binge. Whole nuts are also a choking and obstruction size for small breeds.
How to serve it safely
Plain, unsalted, roasted, chopped small, and only occasionally. Never from a mixed nut bowl โ macadamias, which are genuinely toxic to dogs, are frequently in the same bowl.

Frequently asked questions
How many cashews are too many?
There is no toxic threshold to quote, because the issue is fat rather than poison. A handful for a small dog is enough to cause a bad night; more is enough to risk pancreatitis.
What if the bowl also had macadamias?
Then call a vet. Macadamia nuts cause weakness, tremors, vomiting and an unsteady back end in dogs, and they are commonly mixed in with other nuts.
