As a treat or a settling meal, rice should stay a modest part of the bowl — roughly a quarter of the portion, mixed with a lean protein like plain boiled chicken. Because it is high on the glycaemic index and low in fibre, it is not a food to feed generously long-term, and diabetic or overweight dogs are better served by their normal diet. Cats can have a little, but they are obligate carnivores and get nothing nutritionally from grains.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
Too much rice usually shows up as weight gain rather than illness, and occasionally as constipation, since white rice has almost no fibre. Feeding it as a long-term staple crowds out protein your pet actually needs.
How to serve it safely
Cook it plain in water — no salt, no butter, no stock cube, and never with onion or garlic. Serve it cooled and slightly overcooked, which makes it gentler still. The classic bland diet is one part plain chicken to two parts rice, fed in small frequent meals for a day or two, then gradually mixed back into the normal food.

Two to three days at most. It is deliberately incomplete — it lacks the vitamins, minerals and fat balance a dog needs — so it settles a stomach rather than feeding a dog properly. If diarrhoea is still there after 48 hours, the problem needs a vet rather than more rice.
Is brown rice better?
Not for an upset stomach. Brown rice keeps the bran, which means more fibre — good nutritionally, wrong when you are trying to give the gut less to do. Use white for settling, brown only as an occasional part of a normal meal.
