Chocolate is a classic pet poison for good reason: it contains theobromine and caffeine, which dogs and cats clear very slowly, letting them build to toxic levels. Cats rarely seek out sweets, but it's just as dangerous to them.
How much is safe?
Danger depends on the type and your pet's size. Baking and dark chocolate are the most dangerous, milk chocolate less so, and white chocolate has almost no theobromine. As a rough guide, signs can begin around 20 mg of theobromine per kg of body weight — that can be just a few squares of dark chocolate for a small pet. What happens if a cat eats too much?
Signs usually show within 6–12 hours: vomiting and diarrhea, restlessness, a racing heart, high body temperature, tremors and, in severe cases, seizures.
