How much pomegranate for your cat?

How much is safe?
A few plain arils — the juicy seed sacs — for a dog occasionally. That is the whole safe portion. The peel, the white pith and the membranes are rich in tannins, which irritate the digestive tract, and they make up most of the fruit by volume. Cats should not have it; the acidity alone tends to upset them.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
Vomiting and stomach upset are common, and they usually come from the pith and peel rather than the arils. The hard seed inside each aril is difficult to digest in quantity, and a dog that eats a whole pomegranate, rind included, is a genuine obstruction concern.
How to serve it safely
Separate the arils from all the white membrane, rinse them, and offer a small spoonful. Discard the peel somewhere the dog cannot reach — it is the part most likely to cause a problem. Pomegranate juice is heavily sweetened and not a substitute.
