How much plum for your cat?
Most guides say "a few pieces". Enter your cat's weight and get the actual daily ceiling, worked out from plum's calories and the 10%-of-daily-calories treat rule vets use.
Assumes a healthy, neutered adult at a stable weight, and that this is their only treat that day. Puppies, pregnant, very active or unwell pets need different amounts — ask your vet.
Why this verdict for cats
The pit and plant parts of plums are toxic and a choking hazard. Best avoided in cats.
Plums sit on the caution list for exactly the same reason as peaches, cherries and apricots: the fruit is fine, and the stone in the middle is not. With plums the stone is proportionally larger, which makes it a particularly good size to cause trouble.
How much is safe?
A small amount of pitted flesh occasionally is the ceiling, and honestly there is little reason to offer it — plums are high in sugar and there are better fruits. Never let a dog have a whole plum, and be careful in gardens with plum trees, where fallen fruit is a seasonal hazard.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
Beyond the sugar-driven stomach upset, the concerns are the stone and the plant itself. Plum pits contain amygdalin, which produces cyanide when crushed, and the stems, leaves and wilting foliage contain it too. Signs of cyanide exposure — dilated pupils, bright red gums, difficulty breathing, panic — are an immediate emergency.
How to serve it safely
If you do share, wash the fruit, cut the flesh away from the stone entirely, and offer one or two small pieces. Prunes, being dried plums, concentrate the sugar and are a common cause of diarrhoea — skip them.

My dog ate a whole plum, stone included — is that an emergency?
Call your vet. A swallowed stone can obstruct the gut, and a chewed one releases cyanide. Watch for vomiting, straining or lethargy, and go in sooner rather than later if any appear.
What about fallen plums in the garden?
Pick them up. Fermenting fallen fruit adds alcohol to the stone problem, and dogs will happily eat several.
