How Good Is a Dog's Sense of Smell? The Science Behind the Nose

Smelling without ever running out of breath

When you exhale, you push the scent you're smelling right back out the way it came in, resetting your nose. Dogs get around this: a fold of tissue inside the nostril lets them exhale mostly out the side slits, so incoming air keeps flowing while outgoing air swirls scent particles up and pulls in even more. It's part of why dogs can sniff almost continuously on a trail without losing the thread.

A second smell system just for pheromones

Tucked in the roof of the mouth is the vomeronasal (Jacobson's) organ, a separate scent system mostly dedicated to reading pheromones — chemical messages from other animals. It's why dogs sometimes pause with their mouth slightly open and lip curled while investigating another dog's mark; they're routing that information straight to this second system.

That raw sensitivity is why dogs are trained professionally to detect explosives, narcotics, accelerants, invasive species, and even bed bugs. It's also an active area of medical research: working with specialized trainers, dogs have been trained in studies to alert to scent changes linked to dropping blood sugar in people with diabetes, oncoming seizures, and certain cancers. These are highly trained working dogs, not a pet party trick — and scent-detection results are a research tool, never a substitute for a vet's or doctor's diagnosis.
