Raw bread dough is a rare case of one food causing two separate emergencies at once, and both of them get worse the longer you wait. It is a familiar holiday-baking accident: dough left to rise on a warm counter, a dog that can reach it.
How much is safe?
Any meaningful amount of unbaked yeast dough is a problem, and small dogs are at risk from a surprisingly modest lump. Baked bread is a completely different matter — plain baked bread is harmless filler. The danger is specific to raw, yeast-containing dough. Sourdough starter counts.
What happens if a dog eats too much?
First, the stomach is the perfect proofing environment, so the dough keeps expanding after it is swallowed, stretching the stomach wall and in deep-chested dogs raising the risk of bloat and gastric torsion. Second, the yeast ferments the sugars into ethanol, which is absorbed straight into the bloodstream — so the dog develops genuine alcohol poisoning at the same time.
