How much peanuts for your dog?

Peanuts are not toxic to dogs, which is why they slip past most people as a harmless snack. The problems are practical rather than chemical: salt, fat, shells, and the fact that almost nobody buys the plain kind.
How much is safe?
A few plain, unsalted, shelled peanuts occasionally is the sensible limit for a medium dog. Peanuts are high in fat, and the dogs most likely to be offered them are also the ones most likely to be prone to pancreatitis. Cats should not have them — the fat and salt do nothing good, and small nuts are a choking size.
What happens if a dog eats too much?
The fat causes vomiting, diarrhoea and in susceptible dogs pancreatitis, which is painful and sometimes serious. Salted varieties add a sodium load. Shells are indigestible and can obstruct or lacerate. Peanuts stored badly can also carry aflatoxin, a mould toxin that damages the liver.
How to serve it safely
Plain, dry-roasted or raw, unsalted, out of the shell, and only a few. Never honey-roasted, chilli-coated or in trail mix, which usually contains raisins or chocolate. Peanut butter follows the same rules with one addition: check the label for xylitol, which is deadly to dogs.

Not inherently — it is the same fat with more sugar and often salt. The one critical difference is xylitol, which some sugar-free peanut butters contain and which causes a life-threatening blood-sugar crash. Always read the full ingredient list.
Can dogs be allergic to peanuts?
It is rare but possible. Itching, ear infections, facial swelling or vomiting after peanuts warrants stopping and a vet call — and swelling around the face is urgent.
