A few small slices of fresh flesh for a medium dog occasionally. Nectarines are high in natural sugar, so they belong in the treat category rather than the routine, and diabetic or overweight dogs should skip them. Canned nectarines in syrup are a different food entirely and not suitable.
What happens if a dog eats too much?
Sugar and fibre bring diarrhoea and stomach upset before anything else. The stone is the real hazard: it contains amygdalin, which releases cyanide when crushed or chewed, and it is sized almost perfectly to obstruct a dog's intestine or crack a tooth.
How to serve it safely
Wash it, cut the flesh away from the stone, and cut that into bite-size pieces. Dispose of the stone in a closed bin rather than a compost heap or garden, where dogs dig them up. Clear fallen fruit if you have a tree.
