How much coconut for your dog?

Think of coconut as a garnish rather than a treat: a small piece of fresh flesh or a spoonful of unsweetened flakes for a medium dog, occasionally. Coconut oil, despite being widely recommended online, is pure fat and should only be used at a dose your vet suggests. Coconut water is high in potassium and is not a substitute for plain water. Avoid sweetened flakes entirely.
What happens if a dog eats too much?
The fat is the problem. Too much coconut causes greasy stools, vomiting and bloating, and in dogs prone to it can trigger pancreatitis — a painful, sometimes serious inflammation. The shell and husk are separate hazards, capable of obstructing the gut.
How to serve it safely
Offer a small piece of plain, fresh white flesh with no shell attached, or a pinch of unsweetened desiccated coconut on food. Introduce it slowly; a dog that has never had it can react to the sudden fat.
