Why this verdict for cats
The seeds and pit are a blockage risk and the fruit offers cats little. Best avoided.
Persimmon carries a risk that almost no other common fruit does, and it has a name: bezoar. Unripe persimmon contains tannins that can react with stomach acid and form a solid mass — one that sometimes has to be removed surgically.
How much is safe?
Only fully ripe flesh, only a small piece, and only for dogs. Ripe persimmon flesh in a small amount is not dangerous. Unripe or astringent persimmon is genuinely risky, because the tannins clump with stomach contents into a firm mass that can block the outlet of the stomach or the intestine. The seeds and the hard central pit are separate obstruction hazards.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
Diarrhoea and stomach upset from sugar and fibre at the mild end. With unripe fruit or a large amount, the picture becomes repeated vomiting, appetite loss and abdominal pain as a bezoar or obstruction develops — sometimes days later rather than immediately.
How to serve it safely
Choose fruit that is genuinely soft and ripe, remove the skin, the seeds and the leafy top, and offer a small piece of flesh. Discard windfall persimmons from a garden rather than letting a dog find them, since fallen fruit is often unripe or fermenting.

Are persimmon seeds toxic?
