How much dates for your cat?

Dates are one of those foods that feel wholesome because they're natural, and that reputation does not survive contact with a pet's actual nutritional needs. They are, essentially, a concentrated sugar delivery system with a hard stone in the middle.
How much is safe?
A very small piece of pitted flesh, rarely — and for cats, honestly none. Dates are roughly two-thirds sugar by weight, which is more concentrated than most candy, and cats have no dietary use for carbohydrate at all. For a dog, half a small date occasionally is the practical ceiling; for anything diabetic or overweight, skip it entirely.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
The sugar and fibre together produce diarrhoea and stomach cramping fairly quickly, and repeated servings contribute to weight gain and dental disease. The bigger single-event risk is the pit: it is hard enough to fracture a tooth, exactly the wrong size to lodge in the throat or intestine of a small pet, and it does not soften or break down.
How to serve it safely
If you share at all, remove the stone completely, cut a small piece of flesh, and offer it as an occasional novelty rather than a treat you repeat. Never leave a bowl of whole dates within reach — pets swallow them stone and all. Skip stuffed dates entirely: the usual fillings are nuts, chocolate or cream cheese, each with its own problem.

My cat ate a date — should I worry?
The flesh itself is not toxic, so a small amount is most likely a stomach-upset issue rather than a poisoning. The concern is the pit. If your cat swallowed the stone, call your vet — in a body that size it is a genuine obstruction risk.
Are dates good for constipation in dogs?
People sometimes suggest them for the fibre, but the sugar load makes them a poor tool for the job, and diarrhoea is a common result. Plain canned pumpkin is the option most vets suggest instead — and persistent constipation needs a vet rather than a home fix.
What about medjool dates specifically?
Larger and even sweeter than ordinary dates, with a proportionally bigger stone. Everything above applies more, not less.
