How much chickpeas for your cat?

Why this verdict for cats
Plain cooked chickpeas are non-toxic in tiny amounts, but cats gain little from legumes.
Plain cooked chickpeas are a genuinely good addition to a dog's bowl — plant protein, fibre, and enough bulk to help a dog on a diet feel satisfied. The problem is that chickpeas almost always arrive in the house as hummus.
How much is safe?
A spoonful of plain cooked chickpeas for a medium dog, a few for a small one. Introduce them gradually — legumes are fibrous and a sudden serving produces gas. Cats can have one or two but gain nothing from them.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
Gas, bloating and loose stools. Canned chickpeas add a significant amount of salt unless rinsed thoroughly, and raw dried chickpeas are hard, indigestible and a choking hazard.
How to serve it safely
Cook dried chickpeas plain until soft, or rinse canned ones well to remove the brine, then mash or serve whole with nothing added. Hummus is the thing to avoid: it is built on garlic, often lemon and salt, and garlic damages a dog's red blood cells. Falafel is deep-fried and usually contains onion too.

Call your vet with your dog's weight and roughly how much. Hummus is garlic-heavy, and allium signs — weakness, pale gums, dark urine — can take a day or more to appear, so a dog that seems fine right after is not reassurance.
Are chickpeas linked to heart disease in dogs?
There has been ongoing investigation into grain-free diets high in legumes and a form of heart disease called DCM, and the picture is still not settled. That concern is about diets built around legumes as a main ingredient, not about a spoonful of chickpeas as a treat. If your dog eats a grain-free legume-heavy food, that is a conversation worth having with your vet.
