How much asparagus for your cat?

Assumes a healthy, neutered adult at a stable weight, and that this is their only treat that day. Puppies, pregnant, very active or unwell pets need different amounts — ask your vet.

Cooked asparagus is non-toxic but offers cats little and can cause mild stomach upset.
Asparagus is safe for dogs, which is about the most enthusiastic thing that can honestly be said for it. Raw it is tough and stringy; cooked enough to be chewable, it has lost most of what made it nutritious.
How much is safe?
A small piece of plain cooked asparagus occasionally. There is no strong reason to make it a regular treat when carrot, green bean and zucchini do the same job better and cheaper. Cats have no use for it at all.
What happens if a cat eats too much?
Gas and loose stools, and — harmlessly but memorably — the same distinctive urine smell it produces in people. The bigger practical risk is raw stalks: they are fibrous and tough, and a gulped piece can lodge or cause choking, particularly in small dogs.
How to serve it safely
Trim off the woody base, chop into short pieces and steam or boil plain until soft, with no butter, oil, salt or garlic. Cool before serving. Never share asparagus from a roasted dish.

No — the ornamental asparagus fern is a different plant and is toxic to dogs and cats, causing vomiting, diarrhoea and skin irritation. Only the edible vegetable is safe.
Can dogs eat raw asparagus?
Better not. It is very tough, hard to digest, and a choking risk. If you are offering it, cook it soft.
