Norwegian Salmon & Your Pet: A Rare Win (When Cooked)

Good news for Norway's watch party: cooked salmon is one of the best treats you can share — lean protein and skin-and-coat omega-3s. The one hard rule is that it must be cooked, never raw. Here's the plate, sorted.

⚠️ If your pet grabs something dangerous, act now — don't wait for symptoms. Call your vet or a poison line: ASPCA 888-426-4435 · Pet Poison Helpline 855-764-7661. Our emergency check takes 60 seconds.

✅ Safe to share (small & plain)

Plain cooked salmon Safe

Baked, grilled or poached plain salmon, flaked and boneless, is a superb treat for dogs and cats — rich in the omega-3s that support skin, coat and joints.

Serve: a small flaked piece, boneless, no salt or seasoning.

🚫 Keep on the human plate

Raw or cured salmon (gravlaks/lox) Never

The one real danger: raw salmon can carry a parasite that causes "salmon poisoning disease" in dogs, which is serious. Cured and smoked salmon adds heavy salt on top.

Signs: vomiting, fever, lethargy — see a vet urgently.

Fish bones Never

Cooked fish bones splinter and can choke or injure. Run your fingers through any piece before sharing.

Why can't dogs have raw salmon? Raw and undercooked salmon (in some regions) can carry a fluke parasite that causes salmon poisoning disease — potentially fatal without treatment. Cooking it through completely removes the risk, so cooked salmon is a yes and raw is a no.
🐱 Cats too: the same hazards apply — and cats are even more sensitive to onion, garlic and alcohol. See foods cats should never eat.

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs eat salmon skin?

A little plain cooked skin is okay but very fatty and often salted — the flesh is the better share.

Is canned salmon ok?

Plain canned salmon in water, no added salt and bones removed, is fine in small amounts.
