World Cup Snacks & Your Pet: 16 Countries, 16 Iconic Foods, What's Safe to Share

One tournament, sixteen kitchens, one very hopeful dog

Every match comes with a table โ€” here's what your pet can (and can't) sneak from it.

Game day means food at snout height in sixteen different flavours — sizzling churrasco, gooey fondue, a Belgian chocolate box. Every watch party is a little buffet of temptation for a dog or cat working the room. The good news: several national dishes hide a genuinely great treat for your pet. The catch: a handful hide something that can send you to the emergency vet. Here's every World Cup nation's signature food, checked one country at a time — drawn from guidance by the ASPCA, the American Kennel Club and Pet Poison Helpline.

The one rule that covers all 16: set aside a small, plain, unseasoned piece before the sauce, salt, onion, garlic or marinade goes on. Plain cooked meat, fish, egg or plain veg — in a bite or two — is where almost every safe share lives. The dish is rarely the problem; what it's cooked in usually is.

The three villains that crash almost every table

Across all sixteen kitchens, the same few ingredients cause the most trouble. Learn these three and you've already spotted 80% of the danger:

๐Ÿง…

Onion & garlic

Toxic to dogs and cats in any form โ€” raw, cooked, powdered. They're the base of sofrito, gravy, chimichurri, marinades and sauces. Signs are often delayed a day or more. Onion ยท Garlic

๐Ÿซ

Chocolate

A true emergency โ€” theobromine builds to toxic levels in pets. Belgium's specialty, and the halftime candy bowl everywhere. Risk calculator ยท Why

๐Ÿ‡

Grapes & raisins

Can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs โ€” and there's no known safe amount. Hiding on the French cheese board and inside a Moroccan tagine. Grapes ยท Raisins

A red onion, a garlic bulb, broken dark chocolate and a bunch of purple grapes on dark slate โ€” four foods toxic to dogs and cats

๐ŸŸข The genuine wins

Dishes where a real, healthy treat is hiding — share the plain version and your pet joins the party.

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ด Norway Salmon

For once, the national dish is genuinely great for pets. Cooked salmon is a superb source of the omega-3s that support skin, coat and joints.

โœ“ Safe:Plain cooked salmon, flaked and boneless.
โœ• Never:Raw or cured salmon (gravlaks/lox) โ€” raw salmon can carry a parasite that's serious for dogs. Cook it through.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ด Colombia Arepas

An arepa is basically a plain corn cake โ€” one of the milder game-day foods. Cooked corn is fine for dogs (it's the cob that's dangerous, and there's no cob here).

โœ“ Safe:A small piece of plain, unbuttered arepa; plain cooked egg.
โœ• Watch:The butter, salty cheese and onion-seasoned fillings piled on top.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ฌ Egypt Koshari

Egypt's bowl of lentils, rice, pasta and chickpeas is built on genuinely dog-safe staples โ€” a rare watch-party win at the base.

โœ“ Safe:A spoonful of the plain lentils, rice, pasta and chickpeas, set aside before the topping.
โœ• Never:The crispy fried onions and the garlicky tomato sauce on top.
Full Egypt guide โ†’

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡พ Paraguay Chipa

Paraguay's cheesy bread is one of the gentler foods here โ€” nothing toxic, just cheese, egg and starch.

โœ“ Safe:Plain cooked egg; a small piece of plain chipa.
โœ• Watch:The dairy โ€” lactose-sensitive dogs and most cats get an upset stomach, so keep it small.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท Brazil Churrasco

A Brazilian BBQ is a pet's dream: hours of sizzling meat at nose height. Plain grilled beef is one of the better things you can share.

โœ“ Safe:A small piece of plain, well-cooked beef from the center; seedless watermelon from the dessert table.
โœ• Never:Garlic marinade & farofa, vinagrete (onion), linguiรงa, the salt crust, and cooked bones or skewers.
Full Brazil guide โ†’

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ท Argentina Asado & chimichurri

Endless grilled meat, and plain lean beef genuinely is a great share. The trouble is the garlic-heavy sauce.

โœ“ Safe:A bite of plain grilled beef from the center โ€” no salt, no sauce, no bone.
โœ• Never:Chimichurri (mostly garlic), chorizo/morcilla, and the salt crust.
Full Argentina guide โ†’

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ Spain Paella

Paella mixes pet-friendly stars (shrimp, chicken, rice, peas) on a base of exactly what pets shouldn't have. The ingredients can be safe while the finished dish isn't.

โœ“ Safe:A plain cooked shrimp (shell & tail off) โ€” cats adore it โ€” or plain chicken, rice and peas set aside before seasoning.
โœ• Never:The onion-garlic sofrito the rice is cooked in; chorizo; shells.

๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ England Fish & chips

Strip back the batter and there's real shareable food here โ€” and one side is a vet favourite.

โœ“ Safe:A small piece of plain cooked fish (no batter, boneless); plain peas.
โœ• Skip:The salty batter, the chips, and chip-shop curry/gravy sauces (onion, garlic, salt).

๐ŸŸก Share carefully โ€” one clear catch

A safe bite exists, but the headline version of the dish is a no. Set a plain piece aside first.

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฝ Mexico Guacamole & tacos

Taco night is built around exactly the ingredients pets shouldn't have โ€” but plain grilled taco meat is fine.

โœ“ Safe:Plain grilled chicken or beef (no taco spice); plain black beans.
โœ• Never:Guacamole โ€” it stacks avocado, onion and garlic in one bowl โ€” plus salsa and pico.
Full Mexico guide โ†’

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ USA Stadium hot dogs

The American lineup is mostly human-only โ€” but two genuinely pet-safe snacks are hiding in the spread.

โœ“ Safe:Plain air-popped popcorn; a bite of plain, unseasoned burger patty.
โœ• Never:Chocolate candy and beer (both emergencies); the hot dog itself is salty and processed โ€” a thumbnail piece at most.
Full USA guide โ†’

๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น Portugal Bacalhau (salt cod)

One word decides everything here: salt. Fresh cooked fish and plain egg are fine; the cured, salted, garlicky dish is not.

โœ“ Safe:Plain fresh (not cured) cooked fish, boneless; plain cooked egg.
โœ• Never:The salt cod itself, the garlic and onion it's built on, and briny olives.
Full Portugal guide โ†’

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Canada Poutine

Poutine stacks three things pets shouldn't have โ€” fries, curds and gravy. The gravy is the real hazard, so this is a clear "keep it human" dish.

โœ“ Safe swap:A piece of plain boiled or baked potato on the side โ€” same spud, none of the risk.
โœ• Never:The gravy (salt, onion, garlic); go easy on fries and curds.
Full Canada guide โ†’
๐Ÿง… Why onion and garlic keep showing up as "never": they damage a pet's red blood cells, and garlic is several times more potent than onion. The danger is cumulative and the signs โ€” weakness, pale gums, dark urine โ€” often don't appear for a day or more, so a "he seems fine" right after eating doesn't mean he's safe. If your pet ate a sauce, marinade or gravy, call a poison line with their weight rather than waiting.

๐Ÿ”ด Guard the table โ€” real toxins

These four lead with genuinely dangerous foods. Keep them up high and out of reach.

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท France Cheese board

A cheese board looks harmless, but the hidden danger isn't the cheese โ€” it's the grapes next to it.

โœ“ Okay:A pea-size piece of plain mild cheese; a little plain baguette.
โœ• Urgent:Grapes (sudden kidney failure, no safe amount), wine, and walnuts.
Full France guide โ†’

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Morocco Tagine & couscous

The fragrant sweet note in many tagines is the trap: dried fruit like raisins, toxic to dogs even in small amounts.

โœ“ Safe:Plain cooked chicken, set aside before the spiced sauce.
โœ• Urgent:Raisins, sultanas and currants in the sauce; plus onion, garlic and stone-fruit pits.
Full Morocco guide โ†’

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ญ Switzerland Cheese fondue

It looks like just melted cheese โ€” but there's wine and garlic melted invisibly into the pot.

โœ“ Safe:A plain, undipped bread cube before it touches the pot.
โœ• Never:The fondue itself โ€” alcohol and garlic in rich, salty cheese. The alcohol doesn't reliably cook off.
Full Switzerland guide โ†’

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช Belgium Chocolate & waffles

Belgium is famous for the single most dangerous thing at any watch party: chocolate. This is the one that can become a real emergency.

โœ“ Okay:A small piece of plain waffle โ€” no chocolate, no sugary topping.
โœ• Emergency:Chocolate (dark and baking are the worst); and never "sugar-free" toppings, which may contain xylitol.

The game-day move that works for every match

You don't have to police the whole room. Before kickoff, prep a little pet snack bowl โ€” a few carrot sticks, plain air-popped popcorn, cucumber slices and frozen watermelon or blueberry cubes. When the negotiation eyes start during the match, you've got an answer that isn't "no," and your pet celebrates every goal without a single risky bite. Not sure about something on your own table? Check any food in seconds before you share it.

Frequently asked questions

What's the safest World Cup food to share with a dog?

Plain cooked salmon (Norway) is a standout โ€” lean protein and skin-and-coat omega-3s โ€” as long as it's fully cooked, never raw. Plain grilled beef (Brazil/Argentina), plain cooked shrimp (Spain) and plain cooked egg (Paraguay/Portugal) are also excellent, in small unseasoned amounts.

Which World Cup dishes are the most dangerous for pets?

The four to guard closely are Belgium (chocolate), France (grapes on the cheese board), Morocco (raisins in the tagine) and Switzerland (wine and garlic in the fondue). Chocolate, grapes and raisins can all become emergencies.

My dog grabbed something off the table during the game โ€” what do I do?

If it involved chocolate, grapes, raisins, xylitol or alcohol, treat it as urgent: call your vet or a poison line (ASPCA 888-426-4435) with your dog's weight. For onion or garlic (sauces, gravy, marinades), call too โ€” the signs can take a day or more to appear, so don't wait for symptoms.

Can cats have any of this food?

Yes, but keep it tiny and plain โ€” a shred of plain cooked salmon, beef or shrimp. Cats are more sensitive to onion and garlic than dogs, and curious cats go for abandoned drink cups, so keep alcohol covered and sauces out of counter range.

Is it OK to give my pet a little of the "safe" dishes every match?

An occasional plain bite is fine, but treats should stay within about 10% of your pet's daily calories. Lean plain protein and crunchy veg are the best picks; salty, fatty and processed foods add up fast in a small body.
